She’s more than a figure on our bottle. She’s the spirit within it.
At Bonded Roots, we honor tradition not just in process, but in presence. That’s why you’ll find Mayahuel, the ancient Aztec goddess of agave, engraved into our identity. She’s the heartbeat of everything we do.
Who Is Mayahuel?
In Aztec mythology, Mayahuel is the goddess of the maguey plant: the source of agave, and by extension, the sacred origin of mezcal. Legend tells of her as a powerful yet tender figure who sacrificed herself to give life to the plant. From her broken body, agave grew.
As the goddess of fertility and transformation, Mayahuel was venerated across Mesoamerica not only for the plant she gave, but for the way she bridged worlds: earth and sky, ritual and pleasure, life and afterlife.
Why She’s on Our Bottle
Mayahuel isn’t decoration, she’s a declaration.
- She represents the land we harvest from: wild and giving of life.
- She represents the labor of women and men who pass down mezcal-making through generations.
- She represents transformation: just as agave becomes spirit, moments become memories when shared.
Feminine Strength, Bottled
Bonded Roots is built on heritage, but also on resilience, connection, and reverence. These are values we live by, drawn from the spirit of Mayahuel, reflected in our founders’ stories, and infused in the mezcal we craft.
In Aztec myth, Mayahuel didn’t just give life to agave; she gave us a way to come together. That’s the energy we bottle.
So when you raise your glass of Bonded Roots, raise it to her.
To the goddess of the land.
To the women who shaped our past.
To the spirit that connects us all.
